Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update
Purpose
Derby is widely known for its recreational programming and facilities. Many people are choosing where they live based on the types of services provided to them.
If Derby is going to continue to draw families, we must provide great recreational opportunities. Derby is an active, involved and interested community filled with diverse people with a multitude of interests. Through our parks and our recreation programs, we provide conduits for people to interact with the community and each other.
Derby plans to accomplish its goals through the following steps:
- Revisit our existing 1999 plan, evaluate the level of completion, and re-prioritize goals left to accomplish.
- Update the demographics of the City to determine the parks and recreation facility needs, including the impact of the DRC and USD 260.
- Establish new recreation facility standards for the City of Derby for recreation-related sports fields, trails, parks and indoor and outdoor amenities based on demand criteria analysis.
- Identify short- and long-term program plans for the City, the DRC and USD 260 and identify how existing facilities are able to support them.
- Identify land acquisition strategies and options to acquire the types of land desired to achieve a balanced park system. This will include potential redevelopment of existing land where appropriate.
- Identify funding options available and other partnership opportunities to support the long-term capital costs and operational costs of the City of Derby to meet and maintain the park and recreation needs for the community.
