Calling All Derby Teens: Youth Advisory Board Wants You!
December 5, 2007

Are you a Derby teen who wants to make a difference? Are you willing to volunteer time to help make Derby an even better place to live? Do you have an interest in government? If so, you should consider applying for the new Youth Advisory Board (YAB).

Background
The YAB was established by the Derby City Council to ensure that a youth voice is included in the Council’s decision-making process. The YAB will act as an advisory arm of the City Council to ensure attention to youth issues and the participation of youth in addressing those issues.

The Mission of the YAB is to:

  • Identify youth issues for the City Council to consider.
  • Respond to youth issues forwarding from the City Council.
  • Be a part of the progress by actively contributing to improving Derby for all young people.

Board Overview
The Board will have 12 positions that include:

  • Class Presidents (4 seats)
  • Student Council Rep (1 seat)
  • DECA Rep (1 seat)
  • Youth Leadership Council Rep (1 seat)
  • Student athlete Rep (1 seat)
  • Other student organizations (2 seats)
  • Open -- Appointed at large (2 seats)

How to Apply
YAB applicants should be enrolled in Derby High School and residents in the USD 260 school district. If you are interested in the YAB, contact City Hall at 788-3132. You may also download an application here.

The deadline to apply is December 19. Appointees will be notified in January.
