City of Derby News Release

Winter Wonderland Call to Action
December 2, 2011

Travelers through Derby have taken notice of the “Winter Wonderland” of outdoor lighted displays in the city this holiday season. Gingerbread kids and large snowflakes can be seen on K-15, while penguins inhabit the waterfall at James and Rock Road. There are also new lighted displays at Madison Avenue Central Park, highlighting the community’s center along Madison Avenue.

PenguinsMany of these displays were made possible because a small group of community members were dedicated to raising private donations and requesting grants to match the City’s contribution from fireworks stand permit fees. After two years, these dedicated volunteers decided to pass the baton to another civic or church group looking for a way to give back to the community.

The Derby Community Foundation is the backbone of the program to raise private gifts and has information to share with groups or individuals interested in adopting the Winter Wonderland Lights as a project for 2012 or 2013. The Foundation has information about fundraising and will provide administrative support throughout the project (depositing checks, sending thank-you letters, etc.).

If you are interested in learning more about this fundraising opportunity, contact Theresa Hearn at the Derby Community Foundation by calling 788-9815 or via email.
