Committee Seeking Donations for Derby Area Veterans Memorial
July 20, 2011

A committee of residents is working to establish the Derby Area Veterans Memorial Walk Veterans Memorial Monumentof Freedom in Garrett Park.

The memorial will feature an entry monument with five stations along the bike path. Each station will be dedicated to a branch of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or the Reserve or National Guard) and include specific tributes to individuals from the Derby area who are Veterans or who have served in the armed services.

The memorial will span a quarter of a mile and have an obelisk (tall four-sided narrow tapering monument which ends in a pyramid-Veterans Memorial Benchlike shape at the top) and a park bench. Colorful banners will be attached to the benches. The memorial will be ADA accessible.

The committee is raising funds for the memorial by selling bricks for $100 each. Those eligible to be recognized include any Derby area honorably discharged U.S. military veteran or current active-duty U.S. military member. The person must have been or is a resident of the Derby area (includes Derby, Rose Hill, Haysville, and Mulvane), attended elementary school, high school or home school in the Derby area, or lived with a parent or guardian in the Derby area.

For more information or to purchase a brick in recognition of a friend or family member, contact Theresa Hearn at the Derby Community Foundation at 788-9815 or admin@derbycf.org.
