City Tree Lighting Set for November 29
November 20, 2007

Looking for a fun way to kick off the holiday season? Join the City of Derby at the 2nd Annual Tree Lighting on Thursday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. at High Park, 2700 E. Madison. Mayor Dion Avello will flip the switch to light a 25-foot Austrian pine tree with more than 3,000 sparkling lights.

The Tree Lighting will feature live music by the new Derby Community Choir, a special reading by a Derby High School drama student, a visit by Santa Claus, hot cocoa and refreshments. The event will be held at the enclosed shelter. A hayride shuttle from the north parking lots will be available as well.

“This is a great time of year in the City of Derby,” said Mayor Dion Avello. “We invite all residents out to High Park to kick off the holiday season on November 29.”

Admission to the Tree Lighting is free, and residents are asked to bring a canned food item to support Operation Holiday Derby.

The Tree Lighting will also serve as the kick-off to the Derby Chamber of Commerce’s “Christmas in Our Town” shopping extravaganza, which runs from November 29 through December 8. Participating stores will have extended shopping hours on November 29 so residents can take advantage of local bargains and register to win door prizes. To see a list of participating businesses, visit www.derbychamber.com or call the Chamber at 788-3421.

Each “Christmas in Our Town” participating business will have a registration box where shoppers can register to win a door prize from that business. The prize drawing will be held after the Derby Christmas Parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 8. The post-parade “Christmas in Our Town” finale event will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the Valley State Bank parking lot, 330 E. Madison. Enjoy entertainment, hot chocolate, a visit by Santa Claus as well as the door prize drawing. Drawing winners must be present to claim their prize.
