City of Derby News Release
Fire & Rescue Receives Thermal Imaging Cameras
October 4, 2010
The Derby Fire & Rescue Department recently purchased two thermal imaging cameras with the help of a grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Federal Grant Program. The grant, worth $16,200, required a 10% match from the City of Derby.
Firefighters traditionally have to crawl on the floor and use their hands and tools to search for people during a fire. The thermal imaging cameras allow firefighters to stand at the threshold of a room and scan the room to pick up heat signatures, such as those produced by people or animals. Firefighters will be able to quickly clear rooms, which will help reduce the potential for injuries and death.
This technology will also help firefighters locate fires within the walls of a structure. Without the use of a thermal imaging camera, firefighters have to tear down walls to check for hidden fire pockets. There will be a cost savings to the home/business owner because the cameras allow firefighters to check for fires or hot spots through walls, eliminating the needs for tearing them down.
“The Derby Fire & Rescue Department is excited about the new technology and would like to thank the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for funding this purchase,“ said Chief Smith. “The citizens of Derby, as well as the members of the Fire & Rescue Department, will benefit from this technology for many years to come.”
