City of Derby News Release

Derby Senior Services Open House
October 11, 2011

The City of Derby is inviting residents to attend the Derby Senior Services Open House on Tuesday, October 25 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Derby Welcome Center, 611 Mulberry Rd.

The open house is being held to celebrate the Senior Center's national accreditation and 30-year anniversary. Derby Mayor Dion Avello will welcome the featured speaker, Mr. Shawn Sullivan, Kansas State Secretary of Aging, at 5:00 p.m.

The Derby Senior Center was recognized as the first nationally accredited senior center in Kansas earlier this year. Accreditation is unique to the senior center field and demonstrates outstanding leadership and commitment to quality programs and services to older adults.

“The Derby Senior Center was recognized for its community participation, variety of programs, support from city officials, and qualified staff members,” said Dee Williams, Senior Center Administrator.

The Senior Center will also celebrate its 30th anniversary this month. The center serves as a community resource for seniors and their families. The center's goal is to support positive aging where educational, physical, and cultural programs enrich the lives of the individual and the community.
