Senior Nutrition Program
June 30, 2010
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is offering a special opportunity to seniors in Kansas - the Kansas Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. The primary goal of the program is to promote better nutrition among low-income seniors by helping them purchase fresh, locally grown produce.
Eligible participants must be 60 or older and have an income at 185% of poverty level or less ($1,670/month or $20,036/year). Eligible participants will receive ten $3 coupons per year.
Here is how the checks work:
- Can only be used at locations displaying signs stating “Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program – Checks Accepted Here.”
- Can only be used for purchasing fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables, herbs, and honey.
- If your purchase is less than the amount of one or more checks, the farmer will add more fruits or vegetables of your choice to make up the difference.
- Items not eligible include ornamental pumpkins, gourds, dried fruits, vegetables, or herbs, jams/jellies, or potted vegetable plants or herbs.
- Checks cannot be used at grocery stores.
- Please sign the checks in advance.
- Checks must be used by October 15, 2010.
Checks are available on a first-come first served basis. If youre interested in this program, please visit the Derby Senior Center at 611 Mulberry Rd. to fill out an application. Questions? Call the Senior Center at 788-0223.
