City of Derby News Release
Record Attendance at Rock River Rapids
August 2, 2011
Attendance so far this summer at the City of Derby’s regional aquatic park is higher than any year since 2006. As of July 31, a total of 69,713 people visited the park since opening for the season on Memorial Day. That’s 2,192 more than this time last year and 1,183 more than this time in 2007, which posted the highest attendance in the most recent five years.
“At this pace, we just might reach 96,500 total attendance for the 2011 season,” said Darcie Parkhurst, Aquatics Director. “This extreme heat isn’t good for much, but it makes for a great time for friends and families at Rock River Rapids.”
Another record was broken last week when the sale of season passes reached 1,768, which broke the 2005 record when 1,735 passes were sold during the first full season the aquatic park was open. While most season pass holders are Derby-area residents, 75% of the people who visit Rock River Rapids reside outside of the Derby area (67037 zip code), according to an annual survey of customers.
“Attracting between 85,000 and 95,000 people in our short summer season of two and a half months ranks Rock River Rapids among the top several attractions in the Wichita metro area, as well as in the entire state,” said Mayor Dion Avello. “We built this park to be a regional draw, and our vision has certainly been realized.”
Rock River Rapids is open daily 12:30 – 7:00 p.m. until August 16 and is easily accessible from Rock Road in Derby. In addition, on August 3, 6, 10 and 13, the aquatic park opens at 11:00 a.m. for toddlers up to five years old and their guardians (16 years and older) for the new Tot Time Exploration program.
