Robert Lee Hired as Derby's New Chief of Police
February 24, 2009

The City of Derby is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Robert Lee as Derby’s new Chief of Police, effective March 23. Chief Lee is currently Deputy Chief & Field Services Division Commander at the Wichita Police Department. He has 28 years of law enforcement experience.

Chief Lee was selected from 44 applicants, which were narrowed to 10 highly qualified individuals for further consideration. The top four candidates participated in a day-long interview process on February 11, followed by additional testing and background checking.

“I have the highest degree of confidence in Chief Lee’s ability to serve the Derby community,” said Kathy Sexton, Derby City Manager. “His experience in community policing, his familiarity with Derby’s history, and his passion for this position make him the right person at the right time.”

The Chief of Police reports directly to the city manager and is a key member of the City’s leadership team. The Derby Police Department, which includes 52 personnel and a $2.4 million annual budget, works to keep the community safe and provides a wide range of law enforcement services.

Chief Lee replaces Interim Chief Doug Chambers, who will return to his role as Deputy Chief. The police chief position became open in October 2008 when Chief Jay Reyes resigned.
