City of Derby News Release

Recycling/Trash Advisory Board Begins Work
July 11, 2008

The City of Derby recently established an advisory board made up of interested Derby residents to learn about options available to the City to franchise residential trash collection and recycling collection services and make recommendations to the City Council about how to proceed. Meetings of the board are public and therefore open to visitors and guests. Meetings will take place at Derby City Hall, 611 Mulberry Rd.

The first meeting will be Tuesday, July 22, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The agenda will consist of orientation of members, an overview of Sedgwick County’s Solid Waste Plan and how it relates to what Derby is doing, and information sharing in preparation for making decisions at future meetings.

The agenda includes a long list of issues for the Board to consider as it develops the parameters of Derby’s new program to franchise residential trash collection and begin a program of curbside recycling collection. Susan Erlenwein, Director of Environmental Resources for Sedgwick County, will review issues such as which items to recycle, collection methods, and surcharges. She will share with the Board her knowledge as well as the experience of other cities on these matters. Time on future agendas will be provided for the Board to further discuss these issues and to decide on its recommended course of action.

The second meeting is planned for Tuesday, August 19 at 4:00 p.m. and will include a public hearing.

Questions or comments about franchising trash and recycling in Derby or about the process being used should be directed to Carolyn Morrison or Kathy Sexton at 788-3132 or via email.
