City of Derby News Release
Public Works Showcase Planned for May 26
May 10, 2010
Have you ever wondered how the City of Derby maintains its streets, parks and equipment? The Public Works Department will showcase equipment used to maintain our city’s infrastructure on Wednesday, May 26 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m. at High Park, 2700 E. Madison.
The Public Works Department is comprised of six divisions: streets, parks, motor pool, water, weld, and sign/signal with support from GIS (Geographic Information Systems). Each division, along with the Wastewater Department, will have equipment on display.
“Kids can sit in the driver’s seat of some of the specialized vehicles used to do our jobs, whether it’s repairing a street, using technology to check sewer and water lines, or managing our parks system,” said Robert Mendoza, Director of the Public Works. “If you’ve ever seen a service vehicle in use and wondered what it was for, this event offers a great chance to ask City staff about the equipment and how it works.”
This event is being held in conjunction with National Public Works Week, an annual tradition since 1960. The observance was established to raise awareness of public works issues, expose students to career opportunities, and increase confidence in public works employees dedicated to continually improving the quality of life for present and future generations.
Special guests at the event include students from the Derby Sixth Grade Center and Derby Middle School. The event is free and open to the public. Parents, homeschoolers and daycare centers are encouraged to bring youngsters to the event.
