City of Derby News Release
Police Investigate Home Burglaries
November 2, 2009
The Derby Police Department is investigating four residential burglaries that occurred in the morning hours on Sunday, October 25 and Monday, October 26. The burglaries occurred in the 1300 block of Prairie Lane, 1700 block of N. Woodlawn and the 1400 block of E. Kay Street.
Two burglaries occurred on each date. In three of the four cases, police believe the suspect(s) waited for the homeowners to leave before breaking in to the residence. In one case, a witness reported seeing a male, 19 to 20 years of age, breaking into the home.
Stolen items include televisions, electronics, jewelry, firearms and a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer.
Residents are encouraged to be alert and call 911 if they see unusual or suspicious activity in their neighborhood. Police are especially interested responding to reports of unfamiliar vehicles in neighborhoods and anyone acting in a suspicious manner or loitering with no apparent purpose.
Police would like to remind residents about the Neighborhood Watch Program, which encourages residents to identify and report suspicious activity. Many times this allows police officers to intervene before or as a crime is occurring. Residents interested in learning more about this program can contact Derby’s Community Education Section at 788-1557.
Anyone with information about these burglaries is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers of Derby at 788-TIPS (8477). All calls to Crime Stoppers are anonymous. If your information leads to an arrest you are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
If you have questions, please contact Deputy Police Chief Doug Chambers at 788-1557.
