December 2011: Shopping Safety Tips

The Christmas season is indeed a busy time of year for all of us. Shopping for gifts ranks near the top of must do tasks during the holidays. By following some practical safety suggestions this holiday season can be a safe and enjoyable time for you and your family.

  • If possible take a friend with you when shopping. It is true there is safety in numbers. Criminals are less likely to approach a group of people then they are a person alone.
  • Park as close as possible to the entrance to the store and select an area that is well lit.
  • When you leave the store have your keys in your hand. Do not prolong your time in a dark parking lot by having to search for your keys.
  • If you are going from one location to another when shopping place items you have already purchased in the trunk of your car. Merchandise that a potential thief can easily see in your car is much more likely to be stolen than items that are well concealed.
  • If you are carrying a purse do not let it dangle from the strap. A purse snatcher looking for a victim will spot someone who does not have good control of their purse.
  • Never carry large amounts of cash. Once cash is stolen is it gone. However, credit cards and debit cards if stolen can be reported to the police and the card issuer. Your potential loss is far less by avoiding cash and instead using credit or debit cards for purchases. Never carry your PIN number with you.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. If a situation does not look right then trust your instincts and use caution. Report to the police suspicious activity that gives you cause for concern.
