Derby Police Department Warns of Phone Scam
January 9, 2008

The Derby Police Department wants residents, especially seniors, to be careful when answering their phones. Since January 27, 2008, three individuals in the Derby area have reported that they had been contacted with a phone scam.

The callers appear to be targeting the senior population. In two of the three cases the caller knew the name of the grandchild. During the other call they started out saying “hello Grandma” and waited for a name.

The individuals are calling from the Kansas City area and are stating that they were in Kansas City and either lost or had their wallet stolen along with all of their money, credit cards and Drivers License. They are asking that the victim wire them anywhere from $400 to $600 dollars.

If you receive a similar call, please ask questions regarding your grandchildren and contact members of your own family prior to sending any money. If possible, get a phone number that you can call them back on and call the Derby Police Department at 788-1557 to file a report.

If you have questions, call Lt. Jimmy Queen at the Derby Police Department, 788-1557.
