Community Education
MPO Matt Liston
The Community Education Section is staffed by a Master Police Officer and two SROs (School Resource Officers).
This section is tasked with crime prevention and developing and implementing citizen safety information programs. Crime prevention includes: Neighborhood Watch, Operation ID, Child ID, and personal safety awareness. This section is also responsible for delivering DARE curriculum to 5th grade students of elementary schools within the city limits, and SRO services at the Derby Middle School and Derby High School.
Citizen Police Academy
The Citizen Police Academy is a free 12-week program designated to give citizens of the Derby area a working knowledge of the functions of their police department. Citizens who attend the academy will explore various areas of law enforcement through classroom discussion, demonstrations, tours, and hands-on experience.
Participants will receive a reservation to ride along during a shift with a Derby Police Officer in order to observe law enforcement functions under actual field conditions.
Topics of discussion will include: search and seizure laws, crime prevention, internal affairs, juvenile justice, human relations, criminal investigations, and use of force issues.
Classes will be held once a week, for 12 weeks, and will culminate with a graduation and reception. Classes meet Tuesdays from 6:30 - 9:30 pm.
The next class schedule is to be determined. Please contact MPO Matt Liston at 788-1557 or email him if you're interested.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) training is held each year for Derby 5th grade students. Typically, over 500 students in Derby receive 16 weeks of training in a wide variety of topics. Classes includes information on decision-making, dealing with peer pressure, and the effects of drugs and alcohol. Culminating the year is the annual DARE graduation party. Students from Derby and Haysville schools get together to celebrate their successful completion of the program.
Neighborhood Watch & Block Parties
This program is where neighbors meet and help each other. Many groups participating find out that meeting neighbors is a great additional benefit. An annual block party is the highlight of some watch groups. Watch groups may also be eligible for a discount with some insurance companies. Signs are available for groups to post advertising their participation in Neighborhood Watch.
To arrange a block party, please contact the Community Education department at 788-1557.Officers will set up barricades in your neighborhood and provide community information as requested.
Operation ID
Operation ID is a free program to discourage theft and burglaries. Operation ID allows residents to check out an engraver to mark valuables with a unique number such as a driver’s license number. Once marked, your property is much less valuable to a thief because the property can be traced. Stickers are also made available to advertise your participation in this program. Property to be marked can include: bicycles, stereos, lawn mowers, power tools, televisions, fishing/camping gear, cell phones, and cameras and camcorders.
If you have a need not listed above that involves crime prevention please feel free to contact the Police Department at 788-1557.
School Resource Officer Program
The City of Derby, in partnership with the Derby Unified School District 260, has specially trained School Resource Officers in the Derby High School and Derby Middle School.
Speakers Bureau
This section also offers a Speakers Bureau. If you are in need a speaker for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls or a pre-school class, the Community Education Unit is happy to talk with groups about subjects ranging from bicycle safety to what to do in an emergency.
