Pater Experiences Hometown Hero F-16 Flight
September 24, 2010

Bill Pater and Lt. Col. Derek RouttThe U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s premiere aerial demonstration team, honored Bill Pater, Derby Deputy Fire Chief, with a “Hometown Hero” orientation flight on September 23 as part of McConnell's Open House and Air Show and Wichita Flight Festival.

“The flight was truly an amazing experience,” said Pater. “I went through a three-hour pre-flight briefing, was fitted with flight equipment, learned about the maneuvers, and how to stay conscious while pulling over 9 G’s. I was physically and mentally exhausted at the end of the day, but loved every second of it. I would like to thank the Thunderbirds and McConnell staff for this once in a lifetime experience.”

The Hometown Heroes program is designed to highlight an individual who has given of themselves to better the local community. The Hometown Hero orientation flight is a way to showcase Americans doing amazing things in their community.

Pater was selected for his dedication to the Derby Fire & Rescue Department over the past 23 years. He served as a volunteer from 1987 to 2005, and was hired as a captain when the career department was created in 2005. As a volunteer, Pater served as captain and training officer.

Pater also served as a firefighter for Sedgwick County Fire District #1 from 1990-2005, where he worked his way up to the rank of captain.
