August 11, 2011
You’ve likely seen big events on the Food Channel and maybe even experienced them yourself. Now, a national bar-b-que competition is coming to Derby, Kansas. Mark September 9 and 10 on your calendar for the first of what is planned to become an annual event: the National Bar-B-Que Derby: Honoring Our Heroes held at High Park, 2700 E. Madison. Activities begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. and run through Saturday evening.
Weekend events include the National Scripps Citywide Spelling Derby, 5K Derby Rib Run and 1-Mile Family Fun Run, apple pie baking contest, backyard BBQ competition, and the national open BBQ competition where the winner moves on to the National Best of the Best Invitational in Georgia. More than $10,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs in these competitions!
A People's Choice competition will provide spectators an opportunity to try five samples of bar-b-que for $5 and vote for their favorite. Fresh squeezed lemonade, smoothies, corn on the cob, caramel apples and a beer garden will be available. Other non-food vendors will provide shopping opportunities for spectators.
Proceeds from the National Bar-B-Que Derby: Honoring our Heroes will benefit families at McConnell Air Force Base and will include demonstrations and activities from branches of the military.
