National BBQ Competition Coming to Derby in 2011
November 4, 2010

National BBQ CompetitionIf you love creating great barbeque on a professional level or as a hobby, you will want to mark September 9 and 10, 2011 on your calendar for a new event, the National Bar-B-Que Derby: Honoring our Heroes. Derby will serve as the site of this national event, which will draw competitive local and regional bar-b-que enthusiasts to the city. This event will be hosted by the Derby community and the National Bar-B-Que Festival.

The winner of this competition will receive an automatic entry into the Best of the Best Invitational hosted by the National Bar-B-Que Festival, which is held in Georgia each “time change” weekend. Two other locations, near Niagra Falls and Atlanta, allow the winner to gain access to the national competition; the only other way to make it there is by remaining in the Top 10 among sanctioned organizations for the entire year.

The competition, which will be held at High Park, 2700 E. Madison, will have many exciting involvement opportunities, such as serving as a trained judge or sponsor, or competing in the Bar-B-Que or pie-making contests. Volunteers can be involved in many aspects of the weekend-long celebration. Some positions, including judges, will have strict training and certification required. These opportunities are limited.

All attendees can pay a minimal fee to try several of the meats as they cast their own votes for the "best of the best." Derby is excited to have this event planned around honoring heroes since the date falls on Patriot Weekend.

“Derby has long-hosted military families and appreciates all that they, as well as our law enforcement, fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel, do for this community.” said Derby Mayor Dion Avello. “What better way to honor our patriots than to extend that hospitality to all who will travel to Derby for this fantastic event!”
