Lopez Named #1 in D.A.R.E. Certification Class
January 29, 2008
Derby Police Officer Miriam Lopez finished first in her D.A.R.E. Certification Class. Lopez attended the two-week class in Oklahoma City from January 7 through 18.
“D.A.R.E. is one of the most academically-challenging courses in police training,” said Derby MPO Matt Liston, Community Education Unit. “Finishing first in a class of 18 is a great accomplishment.”
Lopez began her duties as Derby Middle School School Resource Officer on January 3, 2008. Responsibilities include teaching D.A.R.E. to 5th grade students and awareness classes to 7th grade students. She will assist with neighborhood watch, business watch, identi-kid, motorized scooter safety classes, and work at Rock River Rapids during the summer.
Lopez has been a member of the Derby Police Department since September 2004. She has worked on night shift patrol during her career in Derby. Prior to joining the department, she was a member of the U.S. Air Force Security Police for eight years.
