City of Derby Detective Charles Meeks was involved in an automobile accident on Wednesday, May 5, 1976.

His vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle during a heavy rain storm. The other vehicle crossed the center line and collided with Detective Meeks’ vehicle.

Detective Meeks died from his injuries on May 9, 1976. His wife, who was accompanying him, was seriously injured in the accident.

Detective Meeks and his wife were en route to a Kansas Peace Officers Association conference when the accident occurred.

Detective Meeks was 34 years old and a member of the Derby Police Department for 10 years. He was survived by his wife, son, and parents.
