Knebel Honored with Bronze Wreath of Merit
December 13, 2011
Assistant City Manager, Stephanie Knebel, is the recipient of the Bronze Wreath of Merit from the Wichita Police Department. The award recognizes “acts motivated by the desire to benefit the city without thought or personal gain or advantage.”
Knebel received the award for her involvement with the Law Enforcement Memorial Committee of Sedgwick County, which was instrumental in establishing the Law Enforcement Memorial that recognizes all fallen police officers in the county.
The idea of establishing a permanent memorial was formed in 2001. In January 2002, a volunteer committee comprised of members of the Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, and community members met for the first time.
Over the course of 10 years, the committee identified a site for the memorial, incorporated as a 501(c)(3), selected an artist, developed the design, and oversaw the construction of the memorial. The committee also helped raise approximately $620,000 in cash and secured an additional $600,000 in in-kind contributions for the construction of the memorial. The memorial was formally dedicated on April 2, 2011.
“In my 30 years of law enforcement I have not worked with a more dedicated group of people,” said City of Wichita Deputy Chief Tom Stolz. “They worked diligently, with a single-minded determination, to build a permanent memorial to honor officers and deputies killed in the line of duty.”
