Greenscapers
Greenscapers is a city-wide volunteer program of individuals who are committed to beautifying and maintaining the landscaped areas in Derby’s parks, sculpture sites and along the hike and bike path. When a Greenscaper adopts a landscaped area, they adopt a part of their community.
Who can be a Greenscaper?
Anyone! Volunteers can be individuals, several friends, a family, neighborhood association, classroom or school, church group, senior citizens, youth group, Scouts, civic organization, or business. No prior experience is required. Educational materials and volunteers are available to assist you with your questions.
If you have any questions or would like to be a Greenscaper, please contact Tamie Snow, Public Works & Parks Coordinator, at 788-0301 or via email.
What areas can be adopted?
The landscaped areas in Derby’s parks, sculpture sites, and along the hike and bike path. Designated work areas have been divided in such a manner as to require approximately two hours of time each month. Greenscapers who wish to volunteer more time are encouraged to adopt more than one landscaped area.
What is expected?
- Volunteers are making a commitment to maintain their adopted area from April through October each year. They are encouraged to work in their area at least two hours each month.
- Volunteers are required to be 18 years of age or supervised by adults.
- Volunteers are required to read, understand, and abide by the safety guidelines.
- Volunteers need to provide their own gardening tools (rake, hoe, shears, etc.).
- Volunteers are requested to keep track of the number of hours spent volunteering on a monthly basis.
What are the benefits?
- Pride and satisfaction in making and keeping Derby a beautiful place to live.
-The opportunity to give something back to the community, learn something new, and have fun.
- A Greenscapers T-shirt.
- An invitation to an end-of-the-year recognition event.
- An adoption sign naming the Greenscapers to be posted on the adopted site after 20 collective and reported hours per group.
How can Greenscapers help?
Volunteers care for their adopted landscaped area in the following ways:
- Pulling weeds
- Minor pruning
- Raking mulch
- Removing litter
- Reporting problems requiring staff attention or maintenance
How do I volunteer?
If you have two hours of time to volunteer each month, please sign up. Read the safety guidelines, complete the volunteer registration form, select a specific area, review the volunteer tips and get started.
Greenscapers gratefully acknowledges Barkley Construction for its generous donation to the Derby Community Foundation to underwrite the cost of the Greenscapers T-shirts.
It also extends its appreciation to Jack Robbins for his in-kind donation for the development of the Greenscapers logo and design.
