City of Derby

Public Storm Shelters

During the tornado and severe weather season, the City of Derby would like to encourage residents to shelter in place if possible. Residents are advised to create a storm plan as a family and follow this plan in the event of severe weather. Part of the storm plan is evacuation planning, which includes gathering things such as medications, insurance documents, clothes, bedding, bottled water and non-perishable food before the need to evacuate arises. Residents also need to consider plans for pets, and bring food and a travel kennel.

If residents decide to take shelter at an alternate location, there are two storm safe areas in the city.

Fire Station #2, located at 1401 N. Rock Rd., has a storm safe room in the basement. The doors are unlocked during any tornado warnings. Residents are encouraged to park north of the fire station and enter the east door upstairs. There is a handicap accessible entrance downstairs on the west side.

Animals are allowed at this location AND crates are available for use.

Pleasantview Baptist Church at 1335 N. Buckner is open for residents to take shelter during severe weather. The shelter is open when a tornado warning is issued for Sedgwick County and includes the City of Derby. The public should enter the church on the south side. Animals are not allowed at this location.
