City of Derby News Release

Fire Prevention Week: October 3-9
September 22, 2010

Fire Prevention WeekThe Derby Fire & Rescue Department will conduct activities in observance of National Fire Prevention Week October 3 through 9. The goal is to teach Derby’s youth fire safety and exit drills.

The program is designed for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students, but preschoolers will be involved as well. Derby firefighters will talk about home fire safety with the students, including the equipment on the fire engines, why firefighters wear special clothing and breathing equipment, and demonstrate items that can be scary to small children, such as masks and oxygen tanks.

Students will also take a trip through the Derby Fire & Rescue Smoke House, one of the best fire safety houses in the area, to learn what to do if there is a fire in the home. A non–toxic smoke is used to simulate an actual fire.

If you have questions, contact Lt. Chuck Stansfield at 788-5819.
