Derby High School Participates in "Every 15 Minutes" Program
April 13, 2010
In preparation for Derby High School prom on April 17, an “Every 15 Minutes” program will be presented to Derby High School students on April 15 and 16. “Every 15 Minutes” is an educational experience that vividly reminds students of the dangers associated with driving while impaired. The program, organized by Derby Public Schools, the City of Derby, Sedgwick County, and the Red Ribbon Committee, is designed for juniors and seniors, and involves a simulated fatal traffic accident involving a drunk driver.
“The purpose of the program is to provide a picture of a fatal alcohol-related accident, the consequences of the accident, and the effect on all parties involved,” said Lt. Jimmy Queen, Derby Police Department. “Our goal is to show young people the consequences of drinking and driving.”
On April 15 at 1:45 p.m., the police department will conduct an on-scene collision investigation at Derby High School, 920 N. Rock Rd. Derby High School students will serve as the “actors”, portraying the drivers of the vehicles and injured passengers. The event will include on-scene trauma triage, DUI investigation, and death.
On April 16, an assembly will be held in which students will hear a presentation by a local teenager who lost a parent due to a drunk driver.
This program is made possible by the Kansas DUI Victims Center, Air Capital Salvage, and the Derby Community Coalition Promoting Healthy Choices; with assistance provided by the Derby Fire & Rescue Department, Sedgwick County EMS and Emergency Management, EagleMed Critical Care Transport, and Smith Mortuary.
