Derby Skate Park
The Derby Skate Park, located at 424 E. Market, is one of the most recent additions to the city’s park system. The park is located at the site of the old municipal pool.
Background
The Derby Skate Park was a grass roots effort by teens in the City of Derby. While the popularity of skateboarding has grown, the number of places to ride a skateboard have decreased over the years. Many businesses, churches and schools don't allow skate boards on their property, forcing the teens of Derby to find other options.
2003: City staff began researching the idea of a skate park after being approached by a group of Derby students. When construction began on the City’s new aquatic park, Rock River Rapids, in 2003, the idea of using the old municipal pool came to mind. Lighting and restrooms were already in place, the City owned the land and there was plenty of parking. The pool/skate park site would be centrally located and easily accessible.
2004: A Skate Park design team, comprised of City staff and Derby teens, was formed to look into options for the skate park and funding sources.
2005: The City of Derby received several grants for the park, including a $50,000 State Wildlife & Parks grant, along with private donations in the amount of $10,000 which the Derby Recreation Commission matched.
The skate park was in the design process during the course of the year. The City contracted with California Skate Parks to design the park. This company also designed the City of Wichita’s skate park, which opened in 2005.
2006: At the April 25 Derby City Council meeting, the Council voted unanimously to dedicate approximately $272,000 to convert the old municipal pool into a skate park. The money came from various funding sources.
The project included the construction of stairs, rails, banks, and an expansive 4-foot deep bowl area in the shallow portion of the existing pool. A portion of the adjacent pool deck includes numerous street skating elements.
