City of Derby News Release

Derby Parks Open Earlier
August 1, 2011

Place to Be Healthy logoBeginning August 1, city parks in Derby will open at 6:00 a.m., which is an hour earlier than previously. The initiative is in support of Derby Walks, a new independent walking program that encourages residents to commit to daily fitness walking.

“What began as a response to the extreme heat quickly evolved into a permanent expansion of park services to support walking and other healthy activities that take place in Derby parks,” said Mayor Dion Avello. “It’s great to see Derby people of all ages use the nearly 20 miles of bike paths along our major streets and in our parks.”

Derby Walks is an initiative of the Derby Health Collaborative to get the community moving for at least 30 minutes each day. All ages and abilities can participate. Walking is easy and it works! Join today at www.BeHealthyDerby.com.

Residents are encouraged to log their walking minutes on the website daily or weekly. Also, the Derby Recreation Center offers free use of the indoor track on inclement weather days to registered participants in the Derby Walks program. (If the heat index is 105 or greater, participants are welcome to use the track).

“New signs showing the park hours of 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. are on order and will be installed soon,” said Darrell Zimmerman, Parks Superintendent. “When it’s dark outside, exercising is still best accomplished using the well-lit hike and bike paths along the streets since the parks are not well lit.”
