City of Derby News Release
Day of Service Call for Volunteers
September 25, 2009
In August 2009, President Barack Obama wrote a letter to the American public regarding September 11. In this letter, he challenged Americans to set aside September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. He called on all Americans to join in service on September 11 and honor our heroes of that day as well as the brave men and women in uniform who continue to protect our country at home and abroad.
Although the City of Derby was unable to organize an event to coincide with September 11 this year, the City would like to provide an opportunity for residents interested in honoring the memory of September 11 through community service.
On Thursday, October 8, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the City of Derby Public Works Department will hold a community service event at Riley Park, 1115 E. Kay Street. Residents will be asked to help with minor repairs to the park, such as painting the concessions building, painting and staining the dugouts, staining the picnic shelter and several other ground maintenance items. All materials will be supplied, and residents are encouraged to wear work clothes. Lunch will be served at the completion of the event.
Riley Park was one of the first parks in Derby. It was established by the selfless giving of community volunteers known as the Jaycees. Council member Jim Meidinger, who was a member of the Jaycees, will answer questions and provide a history of the park.
If you or any community groups would like to be involved, please call the Public Works Department at 788-0301.
