Crime Prevention: Shed Security
In recent months in Derby there have been 11 sheds broken into with items stolen. Many of the sheds are in the backyards of homes. Since frequently there are expensive items such as lawn mowers, tillers, weed eaters, tools and other items stored in sheds they become attractive targets for thieves. By following some practical preventions tips it is possible to decrease the chance that you will become a victim. Suggested tips include:
- Make sure your shed door can be locked. A good quality lock will deter many thieves.
- Adequate lighting is critical. Thieves prefer poorly lit areas to commit their crimes. We recommend a motion sensor type light.
- If possible, make sure you can see the entry point of your shed from your residence. Thieves are less likely to commit a crime if they feel they can be seen.
- Create witness potential. Trim branches and bushes so that not only you but your neighbors as well can see if someone is trying to break into your shed.
- Engrave expensive property with your name or drivers license number in the event that if it is stolen and recovered it can be returned to you. Call the Derby Police Department at 788-1557 to borrow an engraver.
- If your property has serial numbers make sure you record them and keep them in a location away from your shed. This will make it easier to identify your property should it be stolen.
- If you do not have a Neighborhood Watch consider starting one. We will be glad to assist you. Neighbors watching out for each other can impact crime in your neighborhood. Call 788-1557 to learn more about Neighborhood Watch.
