City of Derby News Release
City Council Appoints Teens to Youth Advisory Board
January 23, 2008
At the January 22, 2008 City Council meeting, the Governing Body made appointments to the new Youth Advisory Board (YAB). The YAB was established in June 2007 by the Derby City Council to ensure that a youth voice is included in the Council’s decision-making process. The board will act as an advisory arm of the City Council to ensure attention to youth issues and the participation of youth in addressing those issues.
The mission of the YAB is to cultivate the link between the City Council and the youth of Derby by identifying and responding to issues pertaining to youth, communicating the concerns of youth and respectfully recommending actions to be taken, promoting service to the community, and engaging teens in community activities so that youth move through their teen years connected to their community.
The following students were appointed to YAB:
- Benjamin Foster, Freshman Class President
- Chris Kellenbarger, Sophomore Class President
- Rory Milner, Junior Class President
- Victor McMullen, Senior Class President
- Jamie Domingues, Student Council Representative
- Caty Compton, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Representative
- Kristen Grooms, Youth Leadership Council (YLC) Representative
- Regan Williams, Student Athlete Representative
- Courtney Frantz, other student organization representative
- Phillip Morris, other student organization representative
- Collen Goff, at-large
- Tyler Underwood, at-large
Appointments are effective through the beginning of the 2008/2009 school year. Students may be reappointed, and seats vacated by graduating seniors will be filled.
The YAB will meet on a monthly basis beginning in February. One of the first issues that may be addressed by the board is amendment of its charter to include participation by home school and private school students in Derby.
