Derby Clean Indoor Air Ordinance


On July 22, 2008, the Derby City Council passed a comprehensive ordinance that prohibits smoking in enclosed public places and places of employment. The ordinance went into effect September 1, 2008 and was updated July 1, 2010 to comply with a new state law.

The following materials and resources are provided to educate, inform, and be of use to business owners, employers, and members of the public in Derby and beyond.

Required Signage: Business owners and employers are required to post signs in conspicuous places reading "No Smoking" with the international "no smoking" symbol.

The following sign design complies with the ordinance's sign requirements. You may print the sign and post it in your establishment. You are also welcome to use signs purchased through a private vendor or retailer if they meet the ordinance's requirements.

Additional Signage: This optional signage may be used in addition to required signage for ease of promoting a smoke-free environment.
