City Looking for Board and Commission Applicants

Derby Mayor Dion Avello is looking for volunteers to serve on the City's boards and commissions. Interested residents may pick up applications at City Hall, 611 Mulberry or download an application.
The application deadline is Wednesday, March 28 at 5:00 p.m. Appointments will be presented for City Council approval by Mayor Avello. Appointments will be effective in May 2012.
Vacancies
ADA Board
(3 vacancies, 2-year term)
The ADA Board meets on the second Monday of each quarter at 4:00 p.m. The board was established by the Derby City Council in July 2006 to work towards full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act with respect to all City facilities and activities. The board also serves as a recommending body to the City Council and will make its suggestions and recommendations to the Council through the City's ADA Administrator.
Construction Trades Board
(3 vacancies - heating & air/electrical/ at-large, 3-year term)
The Construction Trades Board meets on an as-needed basis. The board acts as an arbitrator between the Building Official and aggrieved parties. The board also serves as a recommending body to the City Council for code adoption.
Economic Development Board
(3 vacancies, 2-year term)
Meets on the third Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. One member is a designated representative of the Derby Chamber of Commerce. This board acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council and reviews policies, programs and projects related to the City's commercial development.
Library Board
(1 vacancy, 4-year term)
Meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. This board is an autonomous board that has the responsibility of establishing written policies, rules, and regulations to govern the library property, operations, and safety.
Ordinance Review Advisory Board
(3 vacancies, 2-year term)
Meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. This board reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations to the City Council with respect to amendment or repeal of existing ordinances of general applicability, and the adoption of new ordinances.
Parks & Urban Forestry Board
(3 vacancies, 2-year term)
Meets on the second Thursday of the month at 11:00 a.m. This board assists the Parks Division of Public Works. The board provides support, ideas, educational and environmental programs and events to engage the citizens of Derby in our park system. The board also acts as the Tree Board, which deals with environmental issues and our urban forestry needs. This is an excellent board if you are an active user of our parks and recreational system. Board members must be available to participate in a variety of community celebrations such as Arbor Day, Garden Tour, Tree Lighting, and others.
Planning Commission
(3 vacancies, 3-year term)
Meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Two members must reside outside of the City but within the designated planning area of the City. The duties of the Planning Commission are to annually review the Comprehensive Plan; prepare, adopt and maintain the Zoning Regulations and Subdivision Regulations; hold hearings on special uses, zone changes, and vacation requests; review and approve plats, commercial site plans, and lot splits; and make recommendations to the Council to approve or disapprove requests brought before them.
Senior Center Advisory Board
(4 vacancies, 4-year term)
Meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. The duties of the board are to comment and make recommendations to the City Council with respect to the social, health, educational, nutritional, physical, recreational, and intellectual well-being of the senior citizens of the City of Derby.
Zoning Appeals Board
(2 vacancies, 3-year term)
Meets on an as-needed basis on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. The board, also known as BZA, considers various appeals, variances, conditional use requests, and related zoning matters. Members cannot hold any other
public office within the City, except that members of the Planning Commission may serve on the board.
