City of Derby News Release

City Hall Art Gallery Opening Set for November 8
November 1, 2007

The public is invited to the inaugural City Hall Art Gallery Opening on Thursday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Derby City Hall, 611 Mulberry Rd. The Art Gallery will feature artwork by Derby Middle School and Derby High School students. The event is free and open to the public.

“The art department is thrilled to be able to share the artwork of our students with the community,” said Georgia Gregory, Derby High School Art Department Director. “Our students have exhibited their work in buildings within the district, but have never had the opportunity to share their talent with the general population of Derby.”

The City Hall Art Gallery Project is a partnership between the City of Derby, the Derby Recreation Commission and USD 260. The project was established in November 2007 to feature and inspire the artistic talents of USD 260 residents, especially that of young artists, by contributing to community art appreciation and providing a venue to exhibit artwork.

The Art Gallery at City Hall will feature artwork from the community with particular emphasis on art by students enrolled in USD 260 high school and middle school art programs. Artists will be able to display their artwork in a prestigious community venue as well as list the artwork for sale to interested third parties and, when available, compete for privately sponsored scholarships.

The art gallery will be open for viewing during regular operating hours at City Hall: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will also be available during City Council meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7:00 p.m.
