Animal Control
The primary responsibility of Derby’s Animal Control department is to control and regulate the domestic animal population and to enforce the City’s animal control ordinances. Animal Control works to ensure the peace and quiet of Derby’s neighborhoods, protects public and private property, and provides a safe and healthy environment for residents and pets in the city. Animal Control picks up stray animals, writes citations for ordinance violations, investigates cruelty and neglect complaints, investigates animal bites, works with animal owners to resolve barking and disturbance complaints, and makes educational presentations to civic groups, neighborhood associations and school classes. Frequently Asked Questions Q: I currently own three dogs and a couple of cats but I’d like to add another dog. Are there any limitations on how many pets I can own? A: Each household is limited to four dogs and four cats that are six months or older. As always, when considering adding a new canine or feline member to the family, carefully consider whether this animal fits your lifestyle, resources, and the overall animal dynamic in the household. Q: My vet tells me I need to license my dogs and cats with the City. Is this true? A: Dog and cat owners are indeed required to license each animal. This is part of responsible animal ownership and providing premium caregiving to for pet. Licensing your animal allows the City to track its animal population, producing better-informed public policies and enabling us to contact you with pertinent information regarding your pet, if necessary. Your area veterinarian should be able to accommodate your licensing needs or you can get a license at your convenience at Derby City Hall, 611 Mulberry. If the animal is six months or older, proof of rabies vaccination must be shown at the time of licensing. Licenses must be renewed annually, so mark your calendar! Q: I lost my pet! What should I do? A: All animals picked up by Animal Control within Derby city limits are transported to the Wichita Animal Shelter at 3303 N. Hillside, Wichita. If your animal is missing, immediately contact the shelter at (316) 838-9623 to provide a description of your animal. Even if your animal is not at the shelter, providing shelter staff with a description will help them more quickly identify your pet if he/she does turn up. Do not waste time - owners have only three days to claim their animals. The Wichita Animal Shelter is open:
The cost to retrieve an animal from the Wichita Animal Shelter is $25. Photos of the animals picked up by the City’s animal control officer will be posted below and on Derby Channel 7. Residents can also check the City of Wichita’s web site, www.wichita.gov, to find animals that have been picked up or turned in by residents. There are no animal listings at this time.
