City of Derby News Release
City Prepares for Reclamite Road Projects
October 15, 2009
The City of Derby is preparing for its annual reclamite street improvements scheduled for October 19-27, weather permitting. Reclamite is a cold applied, penetrating surface sealer that is considered an asphalt rejuvenator designed to extend the life of pavement.
Residents will be notified of the reclamite work schedule with door hangers and advised that during the application process, pets and children should not be allowed on the street. If residue gets on a concrete driveway, it can be washed with water or it will wear off in two to six weeks. If residue gets on a vehicle, wash it immediately with soap and water. If that’s not possible, use a degreaser at a car wash. It is recommended to stay off the streets until after sand has been applied, which usually occurs two to three hours after the reclamite is applied. The sand adds traction to the street surface and minimizes tracking of the material.
Reclamite is almost clear in color. As a result, the darkening of the streets will be temporary. The sealer will not restore damaged pavement, but will preserve streets in their current condition for years, delaying more costly treatment and inconvenience.
In case of inclement weather, residents will be notified by a door hanger of any changes in the schedule

Listed below is the typical reclamite application process:
- Traffic and all parked vehicles must be off the affected streets by 8:00 a.m.
- The contractor will close the street to apply the reclamite.
- Approximately 1-2 hours after the reclamite is applied, sand will be applied. Do not drive on the streets until the sand has been applied. The streets will be slick and you could get oil on your vehicle.
- After sand is applied, the street will be opened to traffic. To reduce the chance of residue on your vehicle, hold your speed to a minimum for several days. “Fresh oil” signs will be posted.
- The sand will be swept 1-2 days after application, weather permitting. At this point the project is complete and the oil will be dry.
- If there is rain or standing water on the pavement, street work will be delayed. If case of inclement weather, street work will be rescheduled at the end of the project timeline. Door hangers will be hung on doors with the new date.
The City of Derby appreciates your patience and cooperation during this time. Improved roadways will be the reward for all residents. If you have questions about this process, contact the Public Works Department at 788-0301.
