Derby Walkable Development Plan Public Open Houses Set for Feb. 19 & 20

Walkable Development Plan

The City of Derby, in conjunction with the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, has launched its process to create a Walkable Development Plan that will facilitate ways to reduce dependence on automobiles by reducing barriers and creating more opportunities for walking, bicycling and other forms of active transportation. Three open house events are scheduled for February to show preliminary site recommendations and get feedback. The public is invited to attend any session that best fits their schedule.

Public Open Houses

Tuesday, Feb. 19
4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Lodge at Warren Riverview Park, 321 W. Market St.

Tuesday, Feb. 19
6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Park Hill Elementary School, 1500 Woodbrook Ln.

Wednesday, Feb. 20
4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Derby Hills Elementary School, 2230 N. Woodlawn Blvd.

Preliminary design concepts to improve the safety of active transportation will be shown in an informal open house setting designed to gain feedback and to talk through issues, opportunities, and ideas. Members of the public can stay for five minutes or for the entire time.

The feedback the City gains from the public will help determine what needs and desires exist to (1) reduce the reliance on automobiles, (2) promote safe, enjoyable, and convenient transportation options for all roadway users, (3) provide sidewalk connections and streetscape amenities that promote multi-modal transportation, and (4) find ways to reduce the number of vehicle trips.

Public participation and engagement is encouraged. Comment forms will be available at each open house or comment online at to gather feedback from meeting attendees and those who cannot attend.

It is imperative that the City of Derby Walkable Development Plan reflects the desires of residents, businesses, and visitors to the area. Visit or the City of Derby website at for project updates and meeting announcements.
