Community Spirit

The thing I like about the month of May is how it’s become a community celebration. Prom is followed by graduations. Young people prepare for their summer jobs and their next steps into adulthood. Events held in May show evidence of kids growing up, as well as their parents grappling with mixed emotions of pride and anxiety about what’s next for their kids and for themselves.

Dangers of Distracted Driving

As many of you know, April was National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In years past, most drivers were distracted by passengers looking for items in the car, adjusting the radio or eating while driving. Today, the primary culprit is the distraction caused by your cell phone. As phones get “smarter,” their ability to distract us while driving increases.

Take Time to Recognize Public Servants

During this time of media attention on pay concerns for teachers, many of us have probably had thoughts about a teacher who made a difference in our lives. There is no doubt in my mind that being a teacher is a high calling and that it takes tremendous dedication to work with children (especially teenagers) every day.
