What People Want From Government

The answers in life are often right in front of us. In two rounds of intense focus groups conducted in 1995 and 2001, NCCI discovered that people’s needs when it comes to government are indeed intuitive and basic. We include these observations here as a reminder to local government leaders and professionals and as a point of reflection for members of the public.

NCCI found the people want:

    • Courtesy
    • Respect
    • Knowledge (in the area of expertise)
    • Helpfulness/responsiveness
    • Initiative
    • Problem solving
    • Compassion
    • Timely responses
    • Even-handed treatment of all people in all neighborhoods
